Be Watchful

BE WATCHFUL

Woody Chapman

Welcome to the first LifePoint Men’s Guidance Team Devotional Blog. Our ministry lead verse is 1 Corinthians 16 Versus 13-14. 13 – Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 – Let all that you do be done in love. (ESV) And today I am exploring what it means to me to “be watchful” as our devotion.

The dictionary defines watchful as: watching or observing someone or something closely; alert and vigilant. How appropriate this definition is especially for the times we live in and especially from the perspective of a christian man. Being watchful and vigilant means that we have to stay alert 24/7. We don’t get to take a vacation from it nor are there holidays. We are always on the lookout especially for danger and a watchful eye for the devil’s schemes and potential traps. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us; Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

However just being aware and watching is not enough. Being aware and not taking action is like seeing a red signal light and not stopping! Certainly I’ll be injured and maybe even be killed! Therefore I watch, evaluate and take action. And there lies the problem. Taking action! We have to be quick on our feet so that when we see the danger, we take action.

The bottom line is that knowing the word of God and burying it in our hearts is how we become aware and know what to watch for. And then moving the opposite direction, running if we have to, and avoiding the danger. We must take a bold step and put our faith into action.

Father, we come to You in the name of Jesus Your Son. And we ask for the watchful eyes that You give us in Your word. And for the boldness to call on our faith to avoid the danger. In Jesus Name, Amen.
